Under 18 years old
Once you turn 14 years old, you can start the classroom phase of a TX driver’s education course, but you must wait until you are 15 years old to apply for your learner’s permit.
Complete at least 32 hours of classroom instruction (can be done in-class or online)
Pass the Class C Road Rules and Road Signs Test…. (given at Pearwood Driving School, or included in the online course)
14 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel training…. ( 7 hrs. driving instruction & 7 hrs. observation)
You will also be required to log at least 30 hours of supervised practice with a parent/guardian. (10 hours of which must be at night)
Upon passing Road Rules and Road Signs Test you can schedule an appointment with DPS Online to obtain your Learner’s Permit. Parent(s) or legal guardian must be present at appointment to sign off on paperwork.
You must bring:
- Original or certified birth certificate (not a copy)
- Social security card
- Photo ID of student. (High School ID or passport will work)
- V.O.E. (Verification of Enrollment – Request this form from your school. It expires in 30 days) (During Summer time only, the DPS will allow the use of your last report card)
- Parent or guardian will need two proofs of residency (utility bill, cell phone bill, insurance card, mortgage bill, etc…), (must be most recent bill)
- Application for Texas Driver License Form DL-14B
- Texas Drivers Certificate form DE-964 that you received from driving school, or online school
- Permit Fee: to be determined by DPS
You are allowed to practice your driving skills outside of your in- car instruction with the driving school , but you must be accompanied by a licensed driver 21 years or older in the front seat next to you at all times. You will be required to log 30 hours of supervised practice with parent or guardian (10 hours of which must be at night).
After you have held your learner’s permit for 6 months + 1 day, reached the age of 16 years old, completed your 14 hours of in-car instruction, have logged 30 hours of driving practice with a parent/guardian, and completed the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITD) program, you are ready to get your driver’s license.
The Impact Texas Teen Drivers program (DPS required educational program) is a free, 2 hour video that drivers must view before taking their driving skills exam. After viewing the video, you will be emailed an ITTD certificate of completion. The certificate must be printed out and presented at your driving skills test within 90 days of completion.
18 years or older
Complete 6 hours of Adult Education classroom instruction
Pass the Class C written Road Rules and Road Signs Test
- Complete the Impact Texas Adult Drivers program (DPS required educational program). This is a free, one hour video that drivers must view before taking their driving skills exam. After viewing the video, you will be emailed an ITTD certificate of completion. The certificate must be printed out and presented at your driving skills test within 90 days of completion.
